General submissions for both monthly stories and Introducing… are free; we don’t believe in reading fees. However, for the first time, Short Fiction journal is offering a critique service to submitters who want it, as a way of helping to cover our costs. For a small and highly competitive fee, you’ll receive careful, constructive, professional feedback on your story, from internationally published short fiction experts with over a decade of fiction writing experience.

"Thank you so much for your encouraging and supportive feedback. Every point you made feels like a tiny infusion, and I intend to make full use of all of them in order to nurse my little story to full strength."

If you'd like to take advantage of this service, please send payment to our critique service PayPal account, the address of which is shortfictioncritiques@gmail.com - note, this is different from our submissions address - then email your story to shortfictionjournal@gmail.com, letting us know that you’re requesting a critique and including your PayPal transaction ID.

Please bear in mind that all comments, though professionally informed, are ultimately subjective. You don’t have to act on them, and they’re not the final word on your artistic endeavour. They may be critical – but they are well intentioned, designed to help you move forward either with this piece or your writing as a whole.

The cost is £50, with a maximum story length of 5000 words.

"Thank you for this really helpful feedback. It will help me get back into the story. I'm looking forward to redrafting now."

GUIDELINES

1. Payment for a critique will not prejudice a subsequent submission in any way; critique is done separately from consideration for publication, and are processed via email rather than our Submittable portal, so remain completely separate.

2. Once the critique is sent, we can’t engage in any further discussion of the story or its critique.

3. Please include the PayPal payment ID in your email, so we can match up your payment with your story. Without this, we can’t provide the critique, so please double-check.
